Manual Gearbox Servicing
Making sure your manual gearbox continues to perform
The gearbox is one of the hardest working parts of your car, experiencing great stresses.
The engine works at a relatively narrow range of speeds, and only uses energy effectively at the middle of that range. The gearbox has to convert the engine output to speeds and torque so it becomes practical for driving.
This holds great potential for heat and friction to be generated – threats counteracted by the gearbox fluid lubricating the gears, shafts and bearings where metal slides over metal. It also transmits heat away from the working surfaces.
However, as time goes by, the fluid tends to become dirty, losing its ability to do its job effectively. The dirtier it gets, the worse the fluid performs, causing greater heat and friction. It’s a vicious cycle you should break regularly to preserve your gearbox and its performance… or be prepared for major costs.
That’s why you need to service your gearbox regularly – every 25,000 to 35,000km, depending on your driving style and if you often use the vehicle for towing. It’s best to also consult the schedule recommended by the manufacturer of your car, as some cars ideally require more frequent attention.
What the service includes:
- Drain gearbox fluid
- Inspect the fluid for evidence of sludge
- Fill the gearbox to the recommended level with new fluid of the correct type and viscosity*
- Inspect fit of plug and drain plug
- Check for leaks and wear on seals
- Check shift lever bushes
- Check clutch operation
- Test to check working of serviced gearbox.
* Viscosity relates to how thick or runny the oil is. Different gearboxes may require fluid with different levels of viscosity.
