Volkswagen 6-speed transmission problems

A number of Volkswagen models, including VW Beetle, are fitted with an Aisin 6-speed transmission.

When these transmissions display any problems, many owners make the mistake to have the transmission flushed, assuming that the problem is caused by transmission oil levels or transmission oil quality. In our experience at A Automotive, this hardly ever works and is usually a waste of money. In the end, the valve body requires repair or need to be replaced completely.

Volkswagen Golf with DSG transmission

A Volkswagen Golf fitted with a DSG transmission became available in 2003. The Direct Shift Gearbox can be thought of as two separate manual gearboxes and clutches in one housing that operates as one unit. It achieves fast shift times and avoids the use of a torque converter.

These DSG transmissions can develop a number of problems, usually displayed as shudder on takeoff. To repair a Volkswagen DSG transmission can require the readaption of the transmission and seals, or replacing a worn out clutch assembly. These repairs require complete removal of the transmission.

The control modules on DSG transmissions also fail fairly commonly. This transmission fault is signalled by the engine light coming on or the transmission light flashing.
