Audi Automatic Transmission Repairs

Get your Audi automatic transmission problems fixed by the experts

Audi automatic transmissions typically display similar problems to their stable mate Volkswagen. At A Automotive, we do a lot of Audi transmission repairs.

Audi transmissions fitted to cars manufactured after mid-1995 are highly technical in operation. These transmissions can exhibit a number of typical auto trans problems.

Sometimes these Audi transmissions may have electronic faults rather than requiring a mechanical overhaul. This is especially applicable to Audi A4 models from 2001 onwards.

Audi automatic transmission problems

Problems with your Audi transmission normally come to light in one of these ways:

  • Dashboard indicator flashing or lit up
  • Harsh shifting or binding up
  • Surging sensation when accelerating from a standstill
  • Loss of reverse gear (a common problem on Audi A4 CVT)
  • Loss of gearshifts (stuck in one gear)
  • Delay in engagement of forward and reverse gears
  • Surging, vibrating sensation at low speeds with low throttle opening.

Issues with the Audi multitronic transmission

A large number of Audi vehicles have an 01J CVT transmission, what Audi calls its "multitronic transmission".

While this transmission tends to give good service, some owners encounter driveability issues. Common Audi multitronic transmission complaints include:

  • a shuddering sensation on take off
  • losing reverse
  • losing drive
  • slipping or surging up to around 50km/h
  • loss of hill hold function.

These Audi transmissions problems are often caused because the forward clutch does not have enough holding power.

To fix this, Audi have suggested an upgrade from six to seven friction plates on the forward clutch assembly. At A Automotive, we do this recommended upgrade as a matter of course.

When the forward clutch assembly is upgraded, we also re-flash the computer. This ensures that the valve body operates to its correct parameters and that the correct ratio is achieved on the pulleys that drive the chain. If this is not done, the modified clutch assembly will be damaged and the multitronic transmission will not last as long as it should.

Faults with the ZF transmission in Audi

Audi either manufactures its own conventional automatic transmissions, or they use the popular ZF transmissions, made in Germany. These transmissions are widely used by European car manufacturers. The Audi ZF transmissions have a tendency to develop torque converter shudder. To the driver, this is usually felt as a surging sensation while driving on light throttle, doing 40-50km/h. Repairing this transmission fault requires a complete overhaul and upgrade of the torque converter.

Audi automatic transmission repairs

Apart from the specific Audi transmissions mentioned above, A Automotive also repairs and overhauls all other types of Audi transmissions, including the 6-speed and 7-speed DSG units.

A Automotive are Audi transmission specialists with over 30 years experience repairing European transmissions for dealerships and the public.
